I stopped smoking in February last year with the support of the Stop Smoking Service, and I’m so pleased I did for my baby and myself.
I knew I needed to stop when I found out I was pregnant – that was my main motivation. I was about eight weeks along at the time and smoking about a packet of 20 every two days.
I got in touch with the Southern Stop Smoking Service and with the assistance of my stop smoking coach, I stopped smoking using patches and lozenges. I found the programme helpful, supportive, non-judgmental and I enjoyed the incentives along the way.
It was great to have the encouragement and support of a stop smoking coach. I was regularly told I could do it, which was important for me to hear.
Recently I was invited to an afternoon tea at Nga Kete as a celebration for those who completed the Pregnant Women programme and have remained smoke free. It was lovely to be celebrated and to get together with the other women who have been through it.
I’m pleased I have stayed away from the cigarettes. It’s meant I’ve been able to buy bits and pieces I wouldn’t have been able to before such as clothing and toys for my girl and even a brand new TV cabinet as a treat for myself.
I don’t miss smoking at all. I have more money, more energy and clear lungs. I feel great!
My next goal is two years smoke free, and I have no doubt I can do it!
