I soon became hooked but I have tried to stop a large number of times over the years – I went cold turkey, I tried Quitline, I tried Zyban, nothing worked! I think the longest I have been smoke free is three days.
The push I needed came when I was told I could not have the surgery I so desperately needed if I was smoking. I had been living with horrific pain for 18 months-2 years and I knew I had no choice but to stop.
My flatmate had stopped smoking with the support of Alison from the Southern Stop Smoking Service, so I decided I would contact her and try my luck. She gave me the motivation I needed and the Co machine was helpful because it meant I couldn’t cheat!
I used patches, gum and lozenges and I am currently on Champix.
I have been smoke free now for almost three months with the occasional ‘oops’ – I am still struggling with the first smoke of the day!
But, even with the occasional oops, I am still so pleased I have stopped. I am saving a massive $340 per week and I feel so much better after my operation!
