I started smoking when I was about 11 mainly because everyone else did – even my doctor smoked!
I really enjoyed the habit most of the time. I wasn’t what I would class as a heavy smoker, I went through about a packet of 20 tailor-mades’ a week in the last couple of years. Before that, I was smoking maybe 8-10 per day on average.
I have stopped smoking several times over the years – sometimes for two years at a time but I would always get drawn back into it.
I wanted to stop this time around because it was getting too expensive. So, I got in touch with Alison from the Southern Stop Smoking Service – I had heard about her and the service through someone who had stopped smoking using the service. She is great!
Alison started coming to see me. I had one smoke left when she came and I thought I would go out and buy some more after she left, but I didn’t. In fact, I never did!
I’ve had one cigarette since her initial visit and it tasted disgusting. I used patches and the lozenges and have been smoke free now for six months!
I run a lot of marathons and I like to stay active but I have developed asthma in the last couple of years, so now find this much better without smokes and my sinuses seem to be a lot better as well.
50 years, or there about, I guess there is always going to be issues – lucky it hasn’t been anything more serious!
I’m enjoying not smoking and hope this time I will have the willpower to remain smoke free. I’m saving a bit of money now and can afford to buy oysters, which is a great reward!
