Diploma in Child Birth Education
New Zealand Breastfeeding Authority Maori and Consumer Assessor
It’s the moment you see a new mother stare into her baby’s eyes for the first time overcome with love and joy.
It’s the moment you watch a father have an “ahh moment”, and the moment you realise a new set of parents have “just got it”.
It’s these moments that make you realise, not only have you done your job well, but you definitely have the best job in the world.
An emotional Deli Diack doesn’t try to fight back the tears as she describes this firm belief and assures no one will ever convince her otherwise.
Deli, a mother of two, runs Nga Kete’s Pregnancy and Parenting support service, where the focus is entirely on looking at parenting through the lens of the baby.
In fact that’s why the service is so incredibly unique. It’s about observing the baby’s cues and behaviours and responding appropriately. It’s about enabling, encouraging, and enhancing the journey through parenting. It’s about building resilience and confidence to be the best parents they can be.
“Being a parent is not a right, it’s a pure privilege and we need to take on that role responsibly.”
Deli is a qualified child birth educator and assessor for the New Zealand Breast Feeding Authority. She works alongside midwives and supports pregnant women and dad’s, and if required the whole whanau, around practical solutions to pregnancy and parenting challenges, breastfeeding and stop smoking support, access to local pregnancy and parenting services, one-on-one support, advocacy: linkage and connection to other service and ongoing support.
She describes the service as unique because she has the time to listen. “If a mummy needs support for more than an hour a week, that’s what she’ll get.”
Deli also has wide cultural understanding, and a strong knowledge of who does what in the wider community making access to support simple.
There are too many highlights of the job to put into words but it’s the little things that make it so special.
“It’s meeting the most incredible people in the community, it’s having the opportunity, the honour and privilege, to walk alongside parents on their journey.”
